Getting A Great Headshot For Everything!

How to prepare to ensure you get the best result from your headshot session

When searching for a professional photographer, it is important to not only look for a style of creative photography that resonates personally with you, but also for a photographer that gives you the information needed prior to your headshot, to have you looking your best on the day. When it comes to your appearance, there are three key areas to address to ensure you look the very best in your headshot.

Let's start with attire. When representing yourself and/or your company, it is important to come across as professional, personable and approachable. Avoid dressing in only one colour block, and more importantly, do not wear the same colour as the background you will be photographed against. For men, a nicely fitted suit is key. Ensure that your suit jacket can be done up in the front, as this makes it look a lot neater in your headshot. Ensure that the arm length on your jacket sits just below the wrist, and that your cuffs can be seen slightly (when arms are folded). Ensure ties are neatly tied, with no gap left at the neck between the tie and shirt. Shirts should be pressed and crinkle free, and match nicely with your tie. If you are unsure about what to wear to your shoot, Brisbane Headshots provides a complimentary stylist service prior to your shoot. Feel free to bring along a few outfit options, and we will pick the best colours and combinations to suit you.

For women, a well cut suit jacket with either pants or a skirt is a great option. Again, please make sure that your jacket has buttons, and can do up at the front. Feel free to be a little adventurous with colour and mix up a neutral toned suit with a colourful or embellished shirt/blouse just be wary of too much patterning. Jewellery is encouraged, although should be kept at a minimum. But rules are mean't to be broken:)

For a woman, the key to a fantastic headshot, is proper application of makeup, and neatness of hair style. We do encourage all our clients when using the services of Brisbane Headshots, to utilise the fantastic in-house hair and makeup stylists that we have available (The Powder Room). If doing your own makeup. Avoid mineral makeup if possible, otherwise it may look extremely shiny in front of the camera. Due to it's use of reflective oxides. If doing your own hair, please try and make it as neat and possible, and alleviate as many flyways as you can. This will make it look much neater in front of the camera. We honestly cannot stress enough though, the importance of getting your hair and makeup done professionally before your  portrait session. Our hair and makeup artists specialise in makeup application for use in both creative photography, and headshots. You will be shine free in front of the camera, and your features will be enhanced to bring out your best qualities. Your hair will be perfectly framed to suit your face shape, and feel soft and silky. When choosing a headshot Photographer, having hairdressers and makeup artist's services in house is a huge advantage!
With all the tips we have given you, no doubt..  You will now have the confidence needed to get the best result out of your portrait session.
